Discovering Ways to Feel Better: Tips for Improving Depression
“Even the darkest night will end, and the sun will rise. ” Victor Hugo
It’s hard to live with depression. Some people compare it to being wrapped in a heavy blanket. But the good news is there are things you can do to improve your depression. At first, these activities may feel overwhelming, but the more you do them, the easier they’ll become. Try doing one of these things each day:
Get More Sunshine
Sunshine is good for your body. It can lower blood pressure and relieve inflammation. But it’s also good for your mental health, too. Sunlight exposure causes the brain to produce more serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that’s responsible for making you feel happy.
Going outside to soak up the sunshine is a smart idea. But if the weather is bad or you’re just not up for it, you can purchase a sunlamp. You’ll still get all the benefits of sunshine.
Try Adult Coloring
Adult coloring can be therapeutic because it gives you an outlet to release intense emotions like depression and anxiety. Coloring can help you focus and give you a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day.
There are a variety of adult coloring books available on Amazon. You can find ones that feature cuddly animals, religious sayings, mandalas, ocean life, butterflies, or castles. Once you grab a book you like, choose your coloring tools. You can use gel pens, colored pencils, crayons, or markers.
You are not alone, and you are not defined by your struggles.
Listen to Music
Music has been shown to ease the symptoms of depression and increase self-esteem. One reason could be that music distracts you from what you’re feeling or doing. Another reason could be that music makes you feel less alone.
But choose the music you listen to carefully. If you’re already feeling sad, then putting on sad songs may make you feel worse. Instead, go for upbeat music that energizes you and has a positive message.
If that doesn’t work, then look for a nature track. Often, these tracks blend the sounds of nature like the ocean waves or the birds singing with relaxing instrumental music. The result is music that soothes your emotions and eases your anxiety.
Journal about Your Day
Journaling can be a powerful outlet. Putting your feelings and experiences in words feels liberating for many people. It gives you time to reflect on where you are in life and gives you space to explore issues that are troubling you.
If you don’t know where to start, consider using a journal template..
Keep in mind that these suggestions are not meant to replace medication or a treatment plan from your doctor. Rather, these activities should be done along with your treatment plan.
Your journey may be challenging, but it is uniquely yours, and you have the STRENGTH to OVERCOME.
